Sighthounds have a distinctive foot structure with minimal padding and fine bone architecture. As a result, some dogs, particularly rescued greyhounds, may experience hypersensitivity, chronic injury, or structural damage to the foot, including partial or complete loss of toes. When these stress-bearing demands exceed what standard padding can address, a custom orthotic approach may be required to provide meaningful support and comfort.

Our custom silicone orthotic inserts are individually designed and made for your dog, using a mould taken from their actual foot. Each orthotic is shaped to stabilise, support, and redistribute pressure while working seamlessly inside Hunnyboots.

These are not off-the-shelf inserts. They are custom orthotic supports, made for dogs with specific clinical needs.

Finn is missing his 4th and 5th toes and as a result carries most his weighbearing on his remaining toes and metacarpal pad.

What These Orthotic Inserts Are Designed For

Custom silicone orthotic inserts may be appropriate for dogs with:

  • Chronic or recurring corns

  • Partial toe loss or malformed digits

  • Long-standing pad injuries or scar tissue

  • Altered weight bearing or uneven gait

  • Pain or lameness linked to foot structure

  • Hypersensitive or fragile pads

The goal of the orthotic is to redistribute pressure, reduce focal loading, and improve comfort and stability during walking.

How They Work with Hunnyboots

Each orthotic insert is:

  • Custom moulded to your dog’s foot

  • Made from soft, durable, medical-grade silicone

  • Designed to sit securely inside Summer or Winter Hunnyboots

  • Matched to the correct boot size and shape

Hunnyboots provide external protection, while the silicone orthotic provides internal support. Together, they form a complete support system for compromised feet.

Fitting the Orthotic Insert

When fitting the orthotic insert:

  • Ensure it is seated fully forward into the toe of the boot

  • Check that it lies flat and stable without rocking

  • Fit the boot securely, but not tightly

  • Observe your dog’s gait during the first few wears

Because these inserts are custom shaped, they should not shift or twist when correctly fitted.

When Orthotic Inserts Make the Most Difference

Custom orthotic inserts are most beneficial when a dog:

  • Avoids loading part of the foot

  • Remains uncomfortable despite standard inserts

  • Has altered foot anatomy affecting gait

  • Requires targeted structural support rather than cushioning

Many dogs show improved confidence and comfort once pressure is properly redistributed.

When They May Not Be Suitable

Not every dog requires a custom orthotic.

If your dog is comfortable in Hunnyboots without additional support, or does not tolerate structured underfoot support, standard boots or padded inserts may be more appropriate.

We are always happy to discuss suitability before proceeding.

The Custom Orthotic Process

This service is carried out in consultation with your veterinarian. In some cases, current scans or X-rays may be required to ensure the orthotic is appropriate and safe for your dog’s condition.

This service can be completed remotely. We provide clear, step-by-step instructions and full support to guide you through creating an accurate foot cast at home. We have successfully completed this process for dogs in Australia, the US, and the UK, and are available to assist at every stage to ensure the cast is suitable for designing a custom orthotic.

The price is a range indication dependent on initial consultation and review of images.

For Veterinarians

These custom silicone orthotic inserts function as accommodative foot orthoses. They are designed to redistribute plantar pressure, support altered anatomy, and improve comfort in dogs with chronic foot pathology, deformity, or partial digit loss.

This service is undertaken in consultation with the dog’s veterinarian, and current imaging such as X-rays or scans may be requested to guide appropriate orthotic design. The orthotic is intended to be used in conjunction with a Hunnyboot, providing external protection and internal orthotic support.
