Remembering Hunny

Remembering Hunny

Today, Hunny died peacefully at home in my arms. Her sweet breath smelled of forbidden Lindt chocolate, and her beloved Dr Bec was by our side.

Our beautiful, almost fourteen-year-old girl battled Cushing’s disease, but was taken from us by cancer. Once considered worthless by the racing industry, she became the most famous greyhound who never won a race.

Hunny had made her feelings about racing clear and that she wanted no part of it. She could have been someone’s beloved dog then. Instead, she was locked in racing kennels for another four solitary years. Four years that wore down her spirit and took the joy from a young dog who should have been discovering life.

When she was finally released for adoption aged five, she was guarded, frightened and withdrawn. It took a full year before she trusted us. Learning to relax, to let her guard down and believe she was safe took longer still.

We couldn’t give her back those first five years. But we could give her patience, a home and the freedom to find her own way into the life she should always have had.

She taught us how much that matters. You cannot hurry a dog into feeling safe. We can only keep giving them reasons to believe they are.

Our company bears her name because it began with her. Looking for ways to make her life more comfortable became our work, and that work reached dogs around the world.

Dogs she would never meet have walked more comfortably because of her. Dogs with sore paws, corns and sensitive feet. Dogs needing protection from hot pavements or help finding their footing on slippery floors. Greyhounds, whippets and other breeds whose families were searching, as we were, for something that would help.

Behind everything we make is our girl.

To us, she was the dog we loved, worried over, made room for and organised our lives around. To people around the world, her name came to mean help for a dog they loved just as much.

We will never know all that those first five years took from her. But that reserved little girl, who had known so little of the world, found her way into more hearts than she could ever have known.

We will carry on the work that began with her. Her name will keep travelling to places she never went, helping dogs she never knew. And we will always wish she were here beside us.

Bless you, Bec, for helping her leave peacefully, at home, held and loved.

Sleep well, darling girl. You had nothing to prove and no race to win.

Look what you did, Hunny.

Love Dad.

I am so sorry about your Hunny, but what a beautiful life she lived once she got her freedom! Your words touched my heart so deeply, I recently suddenly lost my 6 year old grey to a heart condition and am here to save my 9 year old’s paws from the hot pavement during summer. Oh how you have helped so many greys, Hunny! Your legacy will live on beautiful girl, from myself and my Maizi who was also so timid, she didn’t leave her bed for the first 5 days but is now a stage 5 clinger, rest easy ❤️
To Hunny’s family, thank you for giving her the life she loved and deserved. It may not be easy right now and she will leave a massive whole in your lives, be kind to yourselves and remember that she will be carried in your (and many other people’s) hearts forever ❤️

    Dear Hunny,
We just wanted to thank you so much for helping your dad design such amazing boots, they have literally been a life-saver for our boy, Halo. We live in Cumbria, in the north of England, and there are all types of conditions we have to deal with on our daily walks – rough tracks, gravel, mud, snow, ice and plenty of rain. When Halo developed corns six years ago we were at a complete loss as to what the future held for him. By chance we happened to spot your name in one of the greyhound groups on Facebok and we haven’t looked back since. Halo would have had to have the most boring walks ever if it wasn’t for Hunnyboots and he thanks you from the bottom of his heart for all of the adventures he’s been able to have, without ouchy feet. As others have said, the biggest legacy of Hunny are the thousands of sighthounds that have pain free walks, all over the world. Sending a big hug to daddy Mark and for his beautiful words that have left us in tears.
Love from Justin, Nat and Halo x

So sorry to hear that Hunny has passed over the rainbow bridge. I will think of her when I put her boots on my Daisy.

I came to this site on my very long search to find the perfect winter boot for my Iggy Malarky, because I read they were one of the best winter boots for the breed, I didn’t expect to read the story of Honey and learn she had just transitioned. My boot search instantly turned tears. My heart goes out to you with the loss of Honey and thank you for giving her the beautiful life she so truly deserved. Rest well sweet girl.

Deepest condolences from our family, our heart breaks for you as Hunny has left a legacy for all greyhound owners who benefitted from them prancing around comfortably in their classy fashionable boots. We lost Daisy just a few months ago too also to osteosarcoma but she’s been kept so happy trotting in your designs for years which we are so forever grateful for. A close friend told us that everytime you feel your heart ache just imagine it’s Hunny turning round and round in circles making herself comfortable x Run free beautiful Hunny, Daisy is waiting on the other end of the 🌈 for you xx
